The recent wildfires in Los Angeles County have left devastating impacts on lives, homes, and businesses. In response, state and federal agencies are stepping up to provide much-needed support. Governor Gavin Newsom has announced tax relief measures for affected taxpayers and businesses, granting additional time to file 2024 tax returns and make payments.

What Relief Is Available?

The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is offering taxpayers and businesses in Los Angeles County a postponement to October 15, 2025, to file 2024 tax returns and make any payments originally due between January 7, 2025, and October 15, 2025. This extension aligns with federal disaster relief measures recently announced for wildfire victims.

Who Qualifies for the Postponement?

The extension applies to a wide range of taxpayers, including:

  • Individuals with tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2025.
  • Businesses with corporate or pass-through entity tax returns due on March 15 or April 15, 2025.
  • Tax-exempt organizations with returns due on May 15, 2025.
  • Those making quarterly estimated tax payments originally due on January 15, April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2025.
  • Pass-through entity elective tax payments, typically due on March 15 and June 15, 2025.

Disaster Loss Deductions

In addition to extended deadlines, taxpayers in presidentially declared disaster areas, such as Los Angeles County, can claim a disaster loss deduction on their 2024 tax returns. This allows affected taxpayers to receive refunds sooner to help with recovery efforts.

A Message of Support

Governor Newsom reaffirmed the state’s commitment to aiding fire victims:
“California is taking action to provide relief to state taxpayers affected by these devastating fires. The people in Los Angeles County have experienced unimaginable tragedy, and the state will continue to do everything possible to help these communities.”

State Controller and FTB Chair Malia M. Cohen added,
“My heart goes out to everyone affected—please know that you are not alone. I am committed to ensuring that Californians have the help they need during this incredibly difficult time through disaster relief resources available through FTB.”
